MPR discusses proposal on constitution amendment
The People`s Consultative Assembly (MPR) discussed a proposal on constitution changes in a joint meeting attended by members of MPR and the Regional Representative Council (DPD) Group leaderships, as well as faction heads in MPR, at the MPR Building, here, on Monday.
The joint meeting was chaired by MPR Chairman Hidayat Nurwahid, and attended by all faction heads in MPR. Nurwahid was flanked by MPR deputy chairmen, namely AM Fatwa and Aksa Mahmud, while the DPD Group was headed by Bambang Soeroso.
The closed-door meeting discussed continued agenda on constitution changes, which would be the fifth amendment of the country`s 1945 Constitution.
Heads of political parties` factions were expected to deliver their views on the proposal to further amend the Constitution. However, The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) and the National Mandate Party (PAN) factions in MPR did not agree with the proposal on the constitution changes.
Meanwhile, Secretary of the DPD Group in MPR Ichsan Loulembah told the press that political parties` factions still had different opinions on the proposal.
However, DPD was consistent in striving for constitution changes, he said.
"DPD suggests a setting up of a special team on constitution changes. The team`s members should comprise faction members in MPR, prominent figures in the community, and academicians," he said.
Indonesia`s 1945 Constitution has experienced amendment or change for four times so far.
