Indonesia says `Hammer` killer executed

Purwokerto, Indonesia - An Indonesian serial killer known as the "Hammer" after his weapon of choice was executed Friday by firing squad, an official said.

Rio "Hammer" Alek Bulo was shot dead by a 12-man firing squad shortly after midnight, senior prosecutor Abdul Hakim Ritonga was quoted by AFP as saying.

He was convicted in 2001 of killing four people to steal their cars, smashing his victims in the head with a hammer. In 2005 he killed a fellow prisoner by crushing his head against a wall.

"His last request to meet his wife and children were fulfilled," Ritonga said.

Indonesia executed four people last month including self-described shaman Ahmad Suraji, who strangled 42 women and drank their saliva in a bid to increase his black magic powers.

Executions in Indonesia are by firing squad, usually carried out at night in isolated and undisclosed locations. The prisoner is notified at least 72 hours in advance.
